Water glass casting is a common investment casting method. It uses sodium silicate, also called water glass, as the binder for mold shells. First, workers make wax patterns. Then they coat the patterns with slurry mixed with water glass and sand. Multiple layers build up a hard shell. Next, the wax is melted and removed from the shell. The empty shell is baked to gain strength. Molten metal is poured into the hot shell cavity. After cooling, people break the shell and clean the metal parts. This process costs less than silica sol casting. It works well for carbon steel and alloy steel castings.
