What is Silica Sol Casting?

Silica sol casting is a type of precision investment casting. It uses a silica sol shell and the lost wax process to create metal parts with a smooth, fine surface.
Silica sol is a stable colloidal solution. It forms when tiny particles of amorphous silicon dioxide disperse in water.
This lost wax casting method is environmentally friendly, and it’s widely used today. When making casting shells for steel components by silica sol casting, you air-dry them naturally. But you must strictly control the temperature, humidity, air volume, wind speed and drying time.
Silica sol casting produces high-quality steel parts, especially in terms of surface finish. It also meets special requirements for engineering parts, such as strength, elongation, hardness and yield.
That’s why it has a wide range of applications. These include aviation, aerospace, automotive, marine and shipbuilding, precision machinery and equipment, electronics, petroleum and chemical industries, nuclear energy, military, medical equipment and construction.

Features of silica sol casting:

The biggest advantage of silica sol precision casting is its high dimensional accuracy and surface smoothness for castings.
So, you only need to leave some machining allowances on parts with higher requirements. Some castings just need grinding and polishing allowances. They can be used without further machining.
Other features of silica sol casting are as follows:
  1. You can set and adjust the pouring process parameters of silica sol casting freely within the process range. This ensures liquid metal fills smoothly. It also reduces or avoids tumbling, impact and splashing of molten metal during filling. As a result, fewer oxide slags form. This helps avoid or reduce metal casting defects and improves the custom casting quality.
  1. Pressurizing molten metal as it fills improves its fluidity. This makes steel castings form well—they get clear contours and smooth surfaces. It’s especially helpful for making large thin-walled castings.
  1. Metal castings crystallize and solidify under pressure. This allows full compensation for shrinkage. So the metal castings have dense structures and high mechanical properties.
  1. The process boosts molten metal yield. Usually, no riser is needed. This greatly improves how much molten metal gets used, with yields typically reaching 90%.

      5. Low-pressure casting offers good working conditions. It’s easy to mechanize and automate production—this is          another major advantage.

  1. Low-pressure casting has a wide range of applications. It works for almost all types of casting alloys. It can cast non-ferrous alloys, as well as cast iron and cast steel. It performs especially well with easily oxidized non-ferrous alloys. It effectively prevents molten metal from forming oxide slag during pouring.
  1. The engineering components made by silica sol casting has no special requirements for casting materials. Any material that works for casting can be used in low-pressure casting. These materials are basically the same as those used in gravity casting and special casting. For example, sand molds (clay sand, water glass sand, resin sand, etc.), shell molds, metal molds, graphite molds, investment casting shell molds and ceramic molds all work. In short, low-pressure casting has few strict restrictions on casting materials.

In the aspect of physical performance testing, tensile test, impact test, hardness detection and metallographic analysis can be carried out. The fluorescent magnetic particle detector can also be used for magnetic particle inspection, ultrasonic inspection and coloring inspection. The various precision castings are produced by our company strictly according to the relevant national standards and industry standards, and have obtained the production license issued by the Germanischer Lloy
